Toward a Model of the Interaction of Centering with Global Discourse Structure

چکیده

Centering was formulated as a model of the relationship between attentional state, the form of referring expressions, and the coherence of an utterance within a discourse segment. In this paper, I argue that the restriction of centering to operating within a discourse segment should be abandoned in order to integrate centering with a model of global discourse structure. The within-segment restriction causes three problems. The first problem is that centers are often continued over discourse segment boundaries with pronominal referring expressions whose form is identical to those that occur within a discourse segment. The second problem is that recent work has shown that listeners perceive segment boundaries at various levels of granularity. If centering models human discourse processing, it is implausible that each listener is using a different centering algorithm. The third issue is that even for utterances within a discourse segment, there are strong contrasts between utterances whose adjacent utterance within a segment is hierarchically recent and those whose adjacent utterance within a segment is linearly recent. This paper argues that these problems can be eliminated by replacing Grosz and Sidner’s stack model of attentional state with an alternate model, the cache model. I show how the cache model is easily integrated with the centering algorithm, and provide evidence from naturally occurring discourses that support the proposed integrated model.

The interaction between local focusing structure and global intentions in spoken discourse

The purpose of the study reported in this paper is to investigate how local focusing structure, analysed in terms of Centering Theory (Grosz, Joshi & Weinstein, 1995), and global d iscourse structure, analysed in terms of discourse segments and discourse segment purposes (Grosz & Sidner, 1986), interact. Swedish dialogue was analysed according to Centering Theory and Grosz and Sidners (1986) di...

Lost Intuitions and Forgotten Intentions

1 Overview To provide context for the discussions of centering that appear in this volume, we review our previous research on global focusing and centering and discuss central unsolved problems in the theory of centering. This paper does not provide a comprehensive review of work on centering, as this volume in its entirety serves that purpose. Rather we present our view of the history of cente...

Centering in-the-Large: Computing Referential Discourse Segments

We specify an algorithm that builds up a hierarchy of referential discourse segments from local centering data. The spatial extension and nesting of these discourse segments constrain the reachability of potential antecedents of an anaphoric expression beyond the local level of adjacent center pairs. Thus, the centering model is scaled up to the level of the global referential structure of disc...
